The Australian Government now recognises that smoking is “The largest preventable cause of death and disease in Australia”.
Whilst I respect that it is one’s personal choice to smoke. I believe that as an employee I have a right to feel safe in my workplace and not be subjected to second-hand smoke, as this appears to be more harmful than smoking itself.
My employer has a duty of care to protect not only to me but my fellow work colleagues from the known health concerns due to second-hand smoke. The Australian Government has, and still is, conducting a very large and expensive Quit Smoking campaign. Thanks to this campaign, people are now being educated about the real dangers of smoking. It is a well-known fact that smoking is detrimental
