We are all encouraged to see the world that we are in today with a joyful eye, even though we forget to do this on many occasions. For it was not long ago in which the world was completely different. We can enrich our lives and accomplish far more if we do this simple task. However, we can become distraught with the negatives that life may bring. To this we as readers look back on the times of Harry Crews, and see what life was really like before the technological age in the United States. This passage deals with the author reflecting on the background of his childhood which included his surroundings and beliefs. The first main idea comes right from the first sentence. Harry states, “[as] young as I was, I knew it was all a lie.” This is a very important thing to keep in mind of how a boy at a young age is able to know that this is not real. This shows that he is an intelligent child. That is until the next line in which he reveals his naïve personality. He says, “I knew there had to be scars because there was no other way to live in the world.” This line is not surprising to hear from a young boy in this time period, because you see to what extent Harry was sheltered. Since Harry thinks that the only way to live in this world is with scars that is saddening to think about. Harry knows nothing besides his own town and the catalogue which he has found a fascination for, which is why he is a naïve child. His fascination with the Sears catalogue is what makes him so creative. The fact that he starts making stories with the people he sees in the book is a very remarkable. He is creative because many kids would not have thought about doing this at his age or even at
