Notes from the Island

Day 1: Today I found myself in a strange place, an island I suppose. I think the plane I was riding plane crashed and that’s how I ended up here. At first I was afraid that I was alone until I met another boy. Now that I think about it, he never told me his name. I’ll just continue calling this boy “Piggy”. From what I can tell, he’s smart but he likes to talk, and talk, and talk. Together, we found a humongous shell that’s called a conch and used it to summon any others who may have been a victim of the plane crash as well. Many other boys, some near my age and some much younger, came from all ends of the island, and I could tell that some of the little boys were afraid. I decided it would be a good time to have a meeting where we could come up with a plan for rescue. Jack continues to fight for power and I can tell that he is jealous of my authority; however, the younger boys seem to be forming a bond with him, and I can see they are envious of his fearless confidence. The original rules and plans I laid out for everyone to follow are losing their effect, and I know any hope we originally had for rescue when we arrived is dwindling. Nobody but Simon, Piggy, and I seem to realize the importance of maintaining order around here. Everyday I worry that the society we have fought so hard to form is nearing savagery. I can see it in the eyes of some littluns that they miss home…we all do, it’s just that us older children have to stay calm and treat the younger ones like they are in good hands. We need to show them that we have the capability to keep them safe, which would be much easier to do if we knew how to keep ourselves safe to begin
