Garvey played a big role in helping Cole’s mother change because he made her realise that Cole’s dad is not the only one to blame for what happened. Cole found out that his dad was arrested and charged with child abuse when he was in the hospital. It was Garvey who confronted Cole’s mom and he told her: “This is what has come from your silence. Keep quiet now, and you share the blame.” (page 116) It was Garvey who convinced her to press charges against Cole's father and testify against him.
I believe that Cole and his mother would be able to build a new life together. I think this because after Cole was mulled Ms. Matthews told Cole what she realized. Additionally, Edwin wanted to show Cole that he will support him no matter what just like Garvey. When Cole, Garvey, and Edwin first got to the island Edwin left the skiff out on the shore without the spark plug just incase cole tried to escape. “Garvey and I believe in your potential, you haven't earned trust not trying to escape in the skiff is a good first step.” (page 137) From that day on, Edwins attitude towards Cole started to change.
