Part A Passage 2: The quote from passage two can be found in the short story “The Black Cat” which was written by Edgar Allan Poe, and was published in 1843. The following quote appears in the middle of the story, “The Black Cat”, after the protagonist has already become addicted to alcohol and proceeds to be abusive towards his wife and their pets. His “former crime” as stated in the quote refers to an incident in which he blinded his once beloved black cat, Pluto, due to a great fit of rage. As a result, this has formed a new sense of hatred towards the cat as it is a reminder of his cruelty and makes him feel guilt and shame about his actions. The identified passage describes the early stages of their relationship and the struggle they both faced in regards to their communication skills after exchanging phone numbers at the concession stand of a movie theater. Initially it is seen that Margot is attracted to Robert's wisdom, maturity, and intelligence, but she soon finds herself struggling with trying to maintain his interest and his attention and as a result no longer feels complete in the relationship. This story touches on the issues revolving around modern dating including those of gender roles, hookup culture, online dating, and male dominance. Throughout the relationship it is evident the couple is heavily reliant on making many jokes which appears to simply be a scaffolding representing the fragile foundation of their connection and the weakness within their relationship. All these complexities, insecurities, different expectations and desires within their relationship formed a fragile base which consequently caused their relationship to break due to the weight of these
