Sophia Calderwood, a young girl who grows into a sophisticated young lady who lived a harsh life. Sophia was a girl when her life was turned upside down and grew to be a lady as the war continued. As a patriot she was forced to be quiet and act as if she was a loyalist. She couldn’t voice her opinion since her hometown was full of the enemy. If Sophia were to speak poorly about the loyalists, she would be sent to a prison or she would be hung. She had to take on many tasks that were not meant for lady in that time period because her brother William was fighting with General Washington to defeat the loyalists and her father was wounded causing him to be no help. Fortunately John Andre left to live in another household, but Sophia was left to free William. Unfortunately, William was moved to the college, a prison at the time, then moved to a prison ship. Sophia went to the prison ship and was told that her brother had passed sometime ago. She was defeated since he taught her to read, write, and he made her memorize the declaration. Sophia idolized him and he was her hero. A quote, not found in the novel, by unknown relates to William Calderwood. “If you don’t fight for what you want, don’t cry for what you lost.” William fought for his beliefs and tried to succeed in everything. He and Sophia shared many of the same opinions which helped Sophia become a person who fought for both of their beliefs. Three years after this horrible event, Sophia became a patriot spy. After agreeing to be a spy, she was moved to a new household and become a “servant”. The household was full of loyalists, so just like she did as a young girl she acted as a loyalist. She soon finds out that John Andre is in the same home as she, but he doesn’t recognize the young lady.
