During the 1930's, racism raged through every corner of the United States, and the imaginary district of Maycomb County displayed the effects of injustice brought upon the African-American community during that time period. In this part of the book, Scout and Dill were outside of the courthouse when they were greeted by a very comforting and not-at-all drunk Mr. Raymond. His life story is by far one of the most interesting and plot-twisting narrative in this book. He tells the kids that he's been faking his alcohol addiction due to Maycombs strict rules on racism and has no choice but to act drunk. He said that Tom was guilty of pitying a lonely girl, and Mayella was guilty of pursuing what she desired, yet they haven't commited a crime. What Mayella did though was that she “merely broke a code... so severe that whoever breaks it is hounded from our midst as unfit to live with.”(203) Because of this act, she feels so guilty, that she would rather have Tom die than live with it. This is the same effect brought by racism that Mr. Raymond had to deal with. Luckily, Mr. Raymond was able to create a cover-up by acting drunk, but Mayella was too slow and she also couldn't take the guilt of knowing that she kissed a black person. This detail was revealing because the cause of the problem (racism) was identified and now they are one step further to coming up with a solution.
