The novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, tells the story of Atticus, Scout, and Jem Finch along with some other family members in the small town of Maycomb, Alabama in the 1920’s. This family has an interesting life in such a small town. They have different social classes and crime, but they all look out for one another. Nothing happens in Maycomb without everyone knowing about it. Lee reveals that courage manifests itself in a variety of ways. Such times are when Mr. Dolphus Raymond expresses and reveals himself to the children that he is not actually a drunk. Another time is when Atticus takes the Tom Robinson case. The most important scene is when Scout stands up for her father outside the county jail with Jem and Dill. A scene from the book that shows that courage develops in the characters is when, outside the courthouse during the Tom Robinson trial, Mr. Dolphus Raymond expresses to Scout and Dill that he is never actually drunk, he just drinks Coca Cola in a paper bag. Scout, Jem, and Dill all went over to the jailhouse and Scout begins to talk to Mr. Cunningham, who happens to be in the group. After listening to what she has to say, Mr. Cunningham tells all the other men to go home. The author says, “‘What's the matter?’ I asked. Atticus said nothing. I looked up at Mr. Cunningham, whose face was equally impassive. Then he did a peculiar thing. He squatted down and took me by both shoulders. ‘I'll tell him you said hey, little lady,’ he said. Then straightened up and waved a big paw. ‘Let's clear out,’ he called” (Lee 206).
