Everybody knows how white Americans abused black people throughout history with discrimination relentlessly beating down on them. It did not matter whether they were in prison, living the good life, or an enslaved person; white people always found a way to terrorize black people. Black discrimination is a significant part of America's past. The film "The Green Mile," directed by Frank Darabont, profoundly conveys the hardships that the fantastic black people in this country had to endure even when they were miracles from God. However, even though many people would discriminate, there were always the people that would see a man for who he is. Everybody has had their fair share of stupid moments, but Percy was a different beast. Percy was a major ethical antagonist during the movie whose first words were, "We got a dead man walking, here! Dead man walking! We got a dead man walking, here... Percy! That's enough" (Darabont, 1999). Percy perfectly depicts how most of America was in those times: evil, racist, ruthless, and mean. Percy would beat the inmates and then defend himself with his connections; however, at the end of the quote, Paul Edgecomb blurts in for Percy to quit. Paul acts as the light at the end of the tunnel for all black people in this movie by standing up for what is right and not allowing direct racism to flood his block. Even hundreds of years later, people still get abused through corruption in the legal department and racist gangs across America. Throughout the movie, Percy relentlessly abused the prisoners saying, "I think of it as a bucket of piss to drown rats in! That's all! Anybody doesn't like it can kiss my ass!" (Darabont, 1999). Percy never did witness a miracle from John Coffey in the movie. Because of this, he immediately assumed John was guilty just because of his blackness. Percy would abuse the prisoners with this basic assumption because he thought they were low lives without any value to this world. Rita Underwood states, "Because of race and place-selective stops, searches, arrests, prosecutions, and sentencing, 90% of felons convicted of drug offenses have been Black or Latino" (Underwood, 2011, p. 1541). Underwood's purpose with this quote is to show how many black people are falsely convicted. When a person is convicted, their lives are changed forever because when they are convicted, job finding becomes incredibly difficult. This status of prisoners being low-class citizens can permanently affect their lives. Even though some policemen are corrupt, most police officers join the academy to make the world better, so they stay on the right side of the law. Most people do not intentionally look down on other people based on race or status
