From the reading, I understand that in today’s culture that there are still race relations. Even though both groups of boys came from the same educational background and the same impoverished living conditions. I believe his study and findings are still prevalent in today’s society. In this essay, I will be breaking down the parts and discussing social conditions, poverty, self-esteem and motivation between two “groups’’, the Hallway Hangers and the Brothers.
In Brent Staples “Black Men and Public Space” and “From Parallel Time”, Staples describes the encounters and stereotyping he went through in his life. In each essay he references several events in which complete strangers judged him because of the color of his skin. Although both essays discus how he was discriminated against and stereotyped Staples actions change drastically from one essay to the next. In the first essay by Brent Staples, “Black Men and Public Space” Staples has very passive actions when he encounters strangers on the street.
Tatum uses the theoretical perspective of both symbolic interaction and conflict theory in this book. The symbolic interaction in this book looks at the social interaction between racial identities, how we see ourselves and how others see us. Furthermore, it manifests itself in the stereotypes and prejudices that are perpetuated in our society; stereotypes help to reinforce negative images and ideals that we have about different races. An example in her book Dr. Tatum explains that one of her white male student once responded in his journal “is not my fault that blacks do not write books” (1445).

This incident highlights the systemic racism that Michael and Francis face as young black men, which impacts their perception of themselves, their place in society, and their interactions with authority figures. Michael's cultural heritage as a Trinidadian-Canadian intersects with his racial identity, shaping his experiences of discrimination and prejudice throughout the novel. Racial Identity and Discrimination Throughout the novel, Michael's experiences with racial identity and discrimination are evident in various incidents. For instance, when Michael and Francis are stopped by the police while innocently walking home, the racial bias they face is clear.

In the book, National Colors: Racial Classification and the State in Latin America, author Mara Loveman examines the history of racial classification in Latin American nations, through the use of census records. There are three main questions that the author works to answer throughout the book. The first, is why did these nations historically classify populations by their race? Why did they eventually decide to stop using this method for some time and why was it brought back? The author also looks at the different ways these nations are influenced by other nations, and how this affects the recording of these populations over time.
The majority of students at Morris High were white or Asian, and the school had the latest computer technology, glorious landscaping, high teacher salaries, and offered students with a variety of foreign languages to study. The interactions that Kozol had with the students from East St. Louis were drastically different from those with the students of Morris High. The students from East St. Louis were poorly educated, as they had faulty grammar and vocabulary, struggled with the concept of time, and had inadequate social skills. These deficiencies are be observed through Kozol’s discussion with the children about the rape and murder of a young girl, who happened to be the sister of one of the children. The discussion Kozol had with the students from Morris High, on the other hand, was completely different.

In the chapter excerpt, Breaking the Silence, Chris Knaus made me realize that regardless of your race does not mean you have an easy life. People underestimate the fact that everyone has problems. You can be rich or poor, black or white, tall or short, etc. Whether it should do with race or not.
Race is a divisive factor in many populations. It is a concept to categorize people based on their physical traits, such as skin color, and genetics. Race can be used as a mechanism for social division. As the novel unfolds, Huckleberry Finn’s perspective on race changes as he sees the importance for equality in Mark Twain’s, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
The reason becomes obvious close to the end of the first article when Philip’s family fails to attend his dancing performance: it upsets him, and reveals the level of the family’s interest in his learning and progress. The family does not pay a lot of attention to his future, therefore he is an easy target for the outside environment, which also proves irrelevance of social capital in the community in this particular case. Thus, the example of Philip shows that social capital in the family is pivotal in forming human capital, and its lack affects children drastically. Imagine this: you are living in a discriminatory world full of people who do not understand you, and choose to judge you by your differences instead of getting to know you. If you are even the slightest bit different. The slightest distance from ordinary, you are judged. You do not get to fight for them to know you, because as soon as they place stereotypes on you. What does it mean to be black? This a question that many black children seem to ask themselves as they are growing up. There is a popularization of black culture in America. From the music that people listen to, to television shows, movies, dances and various other things, the black culture is entertaining for all.
