As a child Davis started playing football and started making headlines as a young man. Scouts started lining up to talk to Davis during his senior year of high school. Coach Schwartzwalder and former player, Jim Brown went to Davis’s hometown to recruit him to play for Syracuse. As the documentary continues the audience gets the understanding that racism is present in colleges. Not very many college have allowed black players to play for their team no matter how much potential that individual has and what they will bring to the team.

The team does not get along with each other until Boone brings them together. Coach Boone is an african american coach that has won many championships. Coach Yoast was head coach for the titans for years before and was up for the hall of fame.
The desire to win in leadership sets a context where true beneficial aspects and lessons are learnt and taught. The lessons cover ethical principles and aspects of responsibility, respect, caring, fairness, and trustworthiness. These styles are based on the film Remember the Titans.’ The backdrop in the film presents itself in football and racism which are the aspects that clash with the leadership styles. Coach Herman Boone’s leadership styles manifest themselves based on his upbringing which provides a tough exterior.
In the scene when he introduces himself to Coach Yoast and his assistants, he is given a negative approach from the assistant coaches. Coach Boone stays calm and confronts the coaches calmly and introduces himself and what he is hoping to gain. He explains that he is not there to take Yoast’s position and that he did not sign up for it, that he was put in the situation. The assistant coaches try to bring him down by saying that Coach Yoast has won many titles and is being honored for his great work and doesn’t need him to ruin that. Coach Boone explains that he himself has also won several titles, and is qualified for the position if he is given the opportunity.
Martin Luther King once said “I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character”. Racism is the intentional act of antagonism against someone of a different race/culture based on the belief that one’s own race is more superior. This problem is major in the society today, it doesn’t matter if you’re black, Caucasian or Asian it can affect you. Racism is such a big issue that it has made it has made it into many films some being; Remember the Titans (2000) and The Boy in Striped Pyjamas (2008). These films are all thriving for one outcome and that is to change the minds of all citizens about racism and end discrimination.
Players, coaches, families, and so on. One of the first people, the director Boaz Yakin, introduces is a black coach named Herman Boone. He is hired at the T.C Williams High School in Alexandria, Virginia. The conflict starts to surface when he is hired under a white coach named, Bill Yoast. At this time around the 1960’s, racism was very prominent, especially in sports.
Daniel J. Losen wrote a policy brief called “Discipline Policies, Successful Schools and Racial Justice.” This piece is a compilation of reviews conducted by researchers that address racial disparities in schools regarding disciplinary policies. Arne Duncan, the Secretary of Education, delivered a speech that suggested “that students with disabilities and Black students, especially males, were suspended far more than their White counterparts.” For example, research conducted in 2006 found that “over 28% of Black male middle school students had been suspended at least once, nearly three times the rate for White males.” () Another key point is that law makers and school officials should keep schools safe while using alternative practical methods
This action by the school board resulted in the demotion of the schools seasoned, Hall of Fame nominee; Bill Yoast (Caucasian). Coach Boone suggests to Yoast that he stay on as assistant head coach. Boone tells Yoast “I think it would go a long way to smooth things over” Yoast initially refuses but is humbled when his team communicates their plan to boycott the school if he can’t be their coach. What follows is a series of racially driven conflicts and it’s up to Boone to get them to see beyond race and work towards a common goal as a united team as they leave for football camp.
A major issue in this counties school system is the issue with busing students, with the biggest one being to change the schools from race assignment or income based. With the change being implemented the schools have become more segregated. North Carolina as a whole stopped using race based assignment plans in the late 1900s after a series of court cases struck down the practices in various settings around the country (Kemp, 2015).In 2000 Wake tried a new assignment policy that was based on income and achievement. This would make it so that no school would consist of more than 40 percent of the students receiving free or reduce lunch, nor more than 25 percent of students performing below grade level, the policy was voted to be ceased in 2010. Wake county school board is seeking to replace a policy which based on race, to a socioeconomic in regards to student placement.
In the film Remember the Titans, racial prejudice and stereotypes are evident throughout. At the start of the movie we are taken back to 1971 where we are introduced to the town of Alexandria in Virginia and the new high school that resides in it, as two schools recently combined to form one desegregated student body called T.C. Williams High School. Football is an immense part of this town and for the people residing there. Shortly into the film, head football Coach Bill Yoast, nominee for the Virginia High School Hall of Fame, is demoted to assistant football coach and the school board hires an African American man by the name of Herman Boone to take his place. Ever feel like something or someone is unfair to you? Well guess how African Americans felt almost 130 years ago. Whites thought that they were being “equal” to African Americans, but if you look at the past, you can clearly see many differences that made African Americans far from equality to whites, this was segregation. Segregation is wrong because white people seem to be favored over blacks, are also treated poorly from whites, and deserve more than what has been given to them.

After a troublesome and torrid time, the black people or what so called slaves, were entering the 20th century with hope of not being discriminated after the slavery had been abolished in the late 19th century. The beginning of 20th century had overseen the stampede of worldwide immigrants to America as they seek for a better life. As for African-Americans, they were entering the phase where they found themselves almost identical with the past century despite the slavery being abolished. Though the abolishment of slavery was written in the 13th Amendment, some of the states still legalized it. They were still in the same position as they were before in some of the states in America.
Brittney Foster SOCY 423 UMUC 03/01/2018 Racial integration of schools Racial integration is a situation whereby people of all races come together to achieve a common goal and hence making a unified system. Racial integration of schools is well elaborated in the two articles by Pettigrew and Kirp. These two articles say that combination in the American schools since 1954 has unceremoniously ushered out the Brown versus Board of Education which was a decision made by the Supreme Court. The topic of discussion of these two articles hence is relevant to our course since it gives us the light of how racial desegregation and racial integration shaped America’s history.
