Racial Injustice: Then and Now In the early to middle 1900’s, injustice towards people of color was accelling regardless of the results of the civil war. Both The Murder of Emmett Till and To Kill a Mockingbird give clear representations of how many colored people still to this day face discrimination as well as in the past. Many people probably thought that the ending of slavery would resolve issues with racial discrimination. Today we know that though this was a vital step to racial equality, many people of color still face injustice in the world today. Racial discrimination can come in many different forms, whether it’s involving the Criminal Legal System, profits in the workplace, or simply prejudice towards African Americans, as it is seen in The Case of Emmett Till and To Kill a Mockingbird. My response to the article New Insights on Emmett Till was filled with thoughts of disbelief. This comes from how unfairly people of color were treated during this time in relation to the amount of racial injustice in today’s time. For example, New Insights on Emmett Till says that Carolyn Bryant Donham said regarding Emmett Till, “Nothing that boy did could ever justify what happened to him.” By saying …show more content…

Tom was an African American who was accused of assaulting a white woman. In this time and place, if a black man has allegedly done anything to a white woman, he is thought of as already guilty. This is because generally during this time, people don’t trust African Americans. In this case, Tom is being defended in court by Atticus Finch, who is a white man and a well respected lawyer, well before this case came up that is. After the word got out that he was defending a person of color, his family and him have been facing almost as much injustice as Tom himself.
