Although, most witnesses are reluctant to stand up and testify against a prosecutor in any case, it is the fear of one’s safety and witness intimidation which is the reason many are hesitant to take action. An individual witness a violent crime in the neighborhood, and is able to identify the perpetrator, he should contact the authorities and testify against the criminal. Whenever someone is a witness to a crime, one’s should feel guilty if it is not reported. The witness of any crime should have integrity and do what is right and not fear what may happen because their rights are protected by the law. The police may ask you to make a statement. You will be questioned and threatened by the police which is witness intimidation. The police are only intimidating the witness because they want to make sure they get criminal off the streets, and the investigation is carried out. By providing accurate information to the police, they will be able to bring the criminal in, question him and he may possibly get convicted the same day. Many cases need a key witness so that the police job is easier. The key witness can provide the most important evidence needed to seal a case. Once the witness has done their part in solving the case, it is up to the police to do their job in finding the criminal. Many see it as snitching and the saying “snitches get snitches” have one afraid to even say anything. The witnesses fear that if they were to tell they are putting their lives at risk and even their families. However, failure to report a crime is not acceptable; even though, you are being labeled a snitch does that mean you should not care about the victim who possibly lost their life. Many would not dare to report anything to the police because they see the police as a threat to society as well. Police officers are responsible for half of the crimes that go on today, why would anyone feel safe by going to the cause of most problems? Even though most polices are seen as a threat to society, it is better to handle things the right way than one’s own way. By reporting the crime you are bringing hope to the victim’s family. If an individual feel threatened after the fact, one has time to report to the police and is secured under the witness protection program. In some cases, the victim’s family or police cannot get a trial or justice for the family due to lack of evidence and no witness report. It is because of one’s reputation and hatred towards the police, which causes many to not come forth and potentially save someone’s
