In the novel “Dear Martin”, a story about teenage African American named Justyce McAllister and has is perseverance through racial profiling on many levels, especially by the ones who are supposed to protect. Justyce and his other black friend Manny was driving and had the music too loud and a white cop who wasn’t on duty at the time, cursed and used racial slurs against the two boys and ended up shooting both of them. Manny was killed and Justyce was in the hospital for a few days. Also Justyce went to a primarily white school where the students didn’t understand the side of what it like to be discriminated against, in theory they are in the majority. Hopes and dreams is the theme of this story, especially when the escape from poverty comes in a ten thousand dollar life insurance check. Arguing between the family members for who receives this check brings a lot of tension with one another. The family decided to buy a house with some of the money and was told by one of the community members that they weren’t allowed because of their skin color and were even offered money for the house to keep the neighborhood a white community. The novel, Love Warrior is about the perseverance of a women named Glennon and her journey to find out who she really is. She turns to God to find help her suffering because their is nothing else for her to do. In the early stages of her life, she is bulimic and gets blackout drunk almost everyday. And when she marries the man of her dreams, years later she finds out that he had been cheating on her for almost their entire marriage. Then her goal is to go around and speak to other women about similar problems because they shouldn’t be alone like how Glennon felt many times throughout the story. Glennon Doyle is the actual person in this novel and the experiences that she went through were real. Her perseverance through these events gives her the credibility to say that if she can get through it, so can anyone else. The book was shown on Oprah Winfrey’s book club which is a spotlight at powerful books that make you think. Just how Love Warrior does. In this novel, even though this doesn’t fully cross down the racial or ethnic lens. It still has many valuable ideas, for example, to never give up. Which Glennon never did, of course there was some really low points in her life but that wasn’t going to stop her from getting what she wanted and that is being accepted by her own
