In Marlon Riggs’ 1992 documentary film titled Color Adjustment, Riggs, the Emmy winning producer of Ethnic Notions, continues his studies of prejudice in television. The documentary film looks at the years between 1948 and 1988 to analyze how over a 40 year period, race relations are viewed through the lens of prime time entertainment. The film examined many of television’s stereotypes and mythes and how they changed over the years. The one hour and twenty-two minute documentary is narrated by Ruby Dee, the American actress, poet, playwright, screenwriter, journalist, and civil rights activist.
For instance, it can portray the Whites more positively than the Blacks. In this case, it is racial stereotyping. Catergorising the Blacks as the inferior one because in the past, they were sold to slavery and thus shunning away from them is a racial stereotype of the Blacks. The media can also affect stereotypes by portraying the Blacks more negatively as compared to the Whites. For instance, in 42, there are separate toilets for Whites and Blacks.
Since the creation of media within colonial America, the images that have portrayed the black race have been created mostly from the white supremacist, patriarchal, heteronormative, capitalistic perspective on black people and black life. Under this problematic gaze, black people and black life have been portrayed through black face and minstrelsy with many negative stereotypes being constantly created and reinforced in the media. These stereotypes include coons, mammies, tragic mulattoes, jezebels, uncle Toms and Bucks. It also includes showing black people as subservient, animalistic, uncivilized, unintelligent and illiterate (Adams-Base, Stevenson and Kotzin, 2014).
The year is 2016 and American society is open-minded to so many issues, except televised stereotypes. Racial and gender stereotypes are continually reinforced by social media and television, it has played a major role in the way society views one another. Enabling stereotypes that have been associated with a person of specific race or gender in the media promotes prejudice. Meaning society expects that person to act a certain way based on what they have witnessed on television or social media. . A perfect example of how television shows incorporate stereotypes based on ethnicity is the tv show “Everybody Hates Chris “which is about a working class African-American family that lives in a poor urban neighborhood in New York.
Until the 1970s, the majority of people who appeared on American television programs were white. Not so many African Americans, Hispanic, or other minorities got to be the lead in a movie, a show, or a positive advertisement. Being white was viewed as normal to be appeared in all sorts of programs in television including news, sports, advertisements, or radio. In contrast, African American and other minorities that happened to make appearance on any entertainment programs tended to be presented as stereotypes with negative images. For example, African American actors played roles as servants while white actors always play roles as the owner or the superior.
These stereotypes are labels that evoke images of oppression, segregation and exploitation of minorities in America. Meanwhile reinforcing the dominance in a social hierarchy. A study from Texas Tech University showed other's views on African American were skewed after being exposed to negative black stereotypes through media. the reiteration of African American stereotypes (Punyanunt-Carter 244). For example, casting African American women to play the typical “angry black woman” stereotype reinforces the thought in Anglo-Americans that all black women present these characteristics. The negative view of African Americans by other ethnicities can be further proven in how, in a film, Anglo-Americans perceived Shaka Zulu as a “madman...hungry for blood” while African Americans themselves perceived the character as a, “historic Zulu,” with, “militaristic wit,” (Punyanunt-Carter 244). This piece of evidence shows the negative connotations perceived by non-blacks regarding African American portrayal in film.
Consequently, people would think about the next generation and believe in equality for every races and skin colors. In Hollywood, movie directors and writers should remove stereotypes, ensure justify for the minority, and teach the younger about equality. Last but not least, the director hurt minority audiences because of the movie they make. Economically, using racial stereotypes in the film helps increase the views and profit.
Being a fast food worker for the past year and a half, I have been exposed to numerous different types of people, and most of them are not the same race as me. When I first started to get to know them, even though at times there was difficulty communicating, we were able to make it work and build stronger relationships. One of my favorite managers was Rose, a Hispanic woman who had been so kind to me. She was an example of someone who was able to teach me things about herself I could have stereotyped and not taken the time to learn anything about her as an individual. Unfortunately, the media representation of minorities has not always been in a positive light. Over the past week, I was tasked to choose between one of two articles that all of the incoming freshman at Union County College in preparation for the up and coming school year. I think the most common types of critical thinking mistakes people make when reasoning morality resides in the false appeal to authority. Too often it seems that people take the word of outside sources without taking the time to actually investigate the claim or the person making it. In my opinion, this problem has been compounded through our biased news media. I don’t believe journalism is impartial, in fact, I feel that our news media pushes their own agenda onto the public, which society takes as truth. Too many people believe the media is giving them factual information without doing any research to see if there is a hidden agenda behind the message.
