The story “Into Thin Air”, by Jon Krakauer, first starts with Jon Krakauer being 29,028 feet up in the atmosphere in the middle of his adventure as he and a few other groups from around the world strive to get to the top of the summit of Mt. Everest. The. While up into the atmosphere, Jon was having a hard time and suffering from the lack of sleep and food, along with a gruesome cough he had had for weeks, which also caused him to break two of his ribs. Later in the story, Jon starts talking about his process of beginning the expedition, joining Rob Hall’s company, and meeting his other group members. Rob Hall has guided many people to the top of the mountain and has claimed his company to be the “world leader in Everest climbing”.

She reinforces her statement by showing an example of a group of preschoolers who were told to draw a picture of a Native American. Most of the children didn’t even know what a Native American was, but after being told to draw an Indian, complied. Recurring elements in all of their drawings were feathers, along with a violent weapon, such as a knife.

In Octavia E. Butler’s novel Kindred, Dana battles an external conflict of time traveling to the past, and experiencing what it was like to be a slave. Dana ultimately resolves this conflict by killing her ancestor named Rufus to return to her present time; however, this choice also illustrates her true character as both scared but brave. Dana’s decision to kill Rufus because she did not want to live in a time where slavery and racism occurred also reveals the universal theme that racism was very common in the past, and it still occurs till this day. When traveling to the past Dana struggles with an external conflict of racism and slavery.

When I was younger I always knew that racism was a problem in the world, but what I didn’t realize is that it does both ways. And that it's not just Caucasian who are racist its people. In TKAM, Jem says,”I always thought Maycomb folks were the best folks in the world, a least that's what they seemed like”. I always thought that African Americans were innocent in this, that it was all one side. They always saw videos on the news of white cops shooting young black men, but the never showed videos of black mean beating up white men just because they thought it was funny.
Many people today seem to live life just as the instructor does, and they don't allow themselves to see people past their skin color. Others take up the traits of Mrs. Ericson as they simply watch racism and discrimination unfolding, only to do nothing to stop it. This short story is a reminder that to live a life of hatred is to live a life of blindness. The only way that racism can truly come to an end is if everyone does their part to stop it. If someone sees or hears something meant to demean a race or culture, then it is their duty to take action against it.
