Vilma Santana, Naomar Almeida-Filho, Robert Roberts & Sharon P. Cooper wrote an article called “Skin Colour, Perception of Racism and Depression among Adolescents in Urban Brazil”. This is an empirical article that addresses the topics of racial discrimination, depression, race, and health. This article also discusses the relationship between races, ethnicity and health has been acknowledged in the understanding of social inequalities in health among the young citizens in Brazil. With that being said, a cluster of households in the city of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil were randomly selected for a cross-sectional study. 973 individuals ranging from the ages of 10 to 21 was subjected to answering questionnaires about racial discrimination, socio-demographic and health-related variables. Of course if an individual was being in an environment of discrimination, no matter if it’s socially, racially, physically, or mentally. Plus being exposed to that condition at a young age, possibly on a day to day basics. Those individuals are going to have a very high stress level that can lead to someone having major depression, major health.issues or even both. Although this research was conducted in the urban community of Brazil, the same issues arise in the urban community in the United States. Furthermore, this was an empirical article.
