The film “A Class Divided” is a powerful and educational video that teaches how racism and prejudice are learned behaviors. Jane Elliott’s experiment on 3rd-grade students and Correction Officers yielded similar results. Although the film initially did not bring in many emotions, in contrast, it felt like another lecture. Then, unexpectedly, about 4 minutes into the video, a slew of emotions surfaced, ranging from empathy, sadness, disgust, and finally, relief. Being a minority, I can emphasize with some of the discrimination described in the video, such as name-calling, isolation, and feeling different from others. I felt sad and disgusted after witnessing how quickly the students and Correction Officers turned on each other due to Elliott’s persuasive message. Society can learn a lot from a young child. For example, children in preschool do not see race and will interact with any student in their class regardless of skin color. Racism and prejudice are taught; without correctly understanding their effects, they can damage others. Color is not more important than any other protected class. If fact, different races and genders should have the same impact on society instead of additional privileges. In a perfect world, racism, prejudice, and stereotypes would not exist, and everyone would be treated equally, but we do not live in an ideal world. Therefore, the film “A Class Divided” is an educational tool that can change the perspective of prejudice, but it needs to be used correctly. Like Elliot says, “Unless it’s done by people who are doing it for the right reasons and in the right way.
