Often it is said that people never change. However this sentiment is not true. This is illustrated in The Watsons go to Birmingham 1963 through the dynamic characters Byron and Kenny Watson. Byron and Kenny Watsons experience a transformation after arriving in Birmingham, Alabama. Kenny Watson's transformation in the novel is so important to the novel because it can show how someone can be impacted by extreme racial prejudice. When Mrs. Watson is worried about Kenny being traumatized by the bombing of the church “Something’s wrong I wonder if Mr. Robert’s friend was right. I wonder if he did see Kenny is that church afterward. Lord who knows what that poor baby saw.”(192) This illustrates how someone could be affected by racism and prejudice.
