New Kid The new kid is a graphic novel by Jerry Craft that follows the main character Jordan Banks as he finds himself as the new kid in school. He finds and overcomes a lot of challenges like racism and stereotypes. A lot of people can relate to this book which is why it is so popular and adored by many. People can also find this a cool book while not a book trying to teach them a lesson and while this does have a message, it tries to target younger audiences with cool pictures and a younger protagonist to try to tell kids that it’s normal to experience these kind of things but that you need to be strong, stick up for yourselves and try to do the right thing. Jordan and Drew get called the wrong names ( New Kid Chapter 5 pages 92-93) and when the teacher calls Drew the wrong name, she says he looks like Deandre ( the name she called Drew) and that he is trouble. ( New Kid chapter 4 pages 66-67). A lot of kids around the world experience racism and discrimination so it's good to make points in books to help stop racism and to make kids more confident and strong so they can stand up to themselves if they are getting bullied because of their skin color or what food they are eating. A lot of children also get bullied because of their culture and their nationality. Many other books talk about racism but a lot of kids like graphic novels, so books like New Kid, so it creates a fun book to read while touching on some topics that other kid books can’t while not being too harsh so kids don’t feel weird or uncomfortable. When Drew was going to get in trouble because Andy tripped, Jordan stood up for him ( New Kid Chapter 12 pages 212-213) and when he did, other kids started telling the truth and when Drew had to clean the floors, they helped him even though they didn’t need to. Friendship is an important part of our life and Friends help us go through the most difficult times and are there when you need them. As a friend, you should always have your friend's back and should try to stand up for them when no one else would. Rember, friendship goes both ways so if you expect your friends to help you and care for you, you should be expected to do the same and even if they don’t ask for your help, check up on them and ask them if they’re okay and a simple “ How’s your day going” can make their day and give them a smile on their face. Lastly, you should try to keep communication with your friends even if you don’t go to school with them like how Jordan plays basketball with his friends from his old school. So, you should always try to keep in touch with your friends but if you have toxic friends or friends that use you, don’t be afraid to stand up for yourself and get out of that relationship, you should rather have no friends than friends that don’t treat you right and people who don’t care about your feelings and what your going
