Writer’s Statement:
For the intertextual study task, I choose to do a short story on the theme racism called Beginning of the End. The purpose of my thought-provoking short story was to entertain the readers with a serious topic focusing on the current problems occurring in our society today regarding race. In particular, the relationship between the police force and coloured people. This short story was influenced by the novel Jasper Jones as it focuses on the themes of racism, social inequality and fear.
The title, Beginning of the End, is an allusion to the aligning of the story. The story begins with the climax which then delves deeper into the complications leading to it. The conclusion relates back to the opening paragraph pulling the story together. The use of layout for the short story was to captivate the readers with a strong opening which causes them to engage in the plot to find out why he was in that position.
Throughout the story, there are no character names. All the characters are referred to in third person pronouns as well as people of a specific race. The lack of character names was to draw readers into concentrating on the race of the characters. Also when issues like this occur in the news, their names are not always mentioned

Her grip tightened on the trigger. The barrel reflected a hateful glare, its contents held his inevitable fate. He desperately pleaded for her to spare his life but the hate in her eyes focused on the colour of the boy’s skin. The colour that defines not only who he is and who he will become but whether he lives or dies. His ancestry was once enslaved by hers, the history written in his bone compelled him to fight for his rights. She would not accept his plea for life. How was he supposed to prove his innocents to her, when her decision was final? His future lays in the hands of a mislead Caucasian
