The book “Between the World and Me” by Ta-nehisi Coates is an empowering book for persons of color particularly for the persons who live in the United States. The book commences with a letter to the authors son samori. The book predominantly speaks on the harsh realities and evident racism that he has observed and experienced by solely being a black body in a “white man’s world.” Throughout the body of this essay, I will discuss the most message that Coates tries to bring across to his audience as well as three takeaways that impacted me.
I am from Jamaica and where I lived, racism was never an issue. The only discrimination present in the country was classism and the absence of racism could be due to the fact that majority of the population was black. I came to America to study as an international student and whilst living in Jamaica, I watched numerous acts of police brutality on various news platforms. At first, I thought that the journalists were not reporting the stories accurately because I was of the notion that no law enforcement officer in his right mind would take a life for no absolute reason. Throughout this book, Coates acted as an advocate on behalf of people of color. The predominant message is that often we as black people are discriminated against because of the stereotype of us being dangerous. In addition to that, he uses his platform to express how often the murders go unnoticed and this further reinforces how much of a racist nation America is.
