The Book All American Boys written by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely is a novel that shows the story of the main character Rashad who was brutally beaten by a white cop paul Galluzzo who racially profiled him and believed he was stealing. Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely show racism and racial profiling through allusion, the use of colloquialism, and characterization. Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely want this novel to grab the attention of younger audiences by using these stylistic techniques to show them the effects of racial profiling and the impacts racism has on a community. The Authors of the book illustrate racial profiling and racism through the use of allusion. An example from the text is a list of names on page 308. The first example of this is on page 169 where Guzzo is screaming at Rashad because he told Jill that he was there when paul attacked Rashad. Guzzo cursed at him to express his anger and the writers put that in so that people understand that he was extremely mad at Rashad for not keeping that a secret. Using these curse words catches younger audiences' attention because they use curse words more nowadays and it would surprise them to see it in a book. The second example of colloquialism in the text is on page 25 where Quinn's brother willy screams “Fuck yeah” and the book gives context to the situation by saying that he screamed that because he was playing his game and knew that it was his brother coming into the room and not his mom. A lot of younger audiences can relate t this because when you are playing a game with your friends you say a lot of curse words but when your parents are around you have to be quieter. Willy's mom wasn't in the room so he just screamed it out and his brother didn't
