Racism has been a prominent issue in many sectors of society, including education. The education system is supposed to be a level playing field where students from different races can access equal opportunities to learn and excel. However, this is not always the case as racism continues to exist in various forms within the education system. Racism in education can be traced back to the early days of the education system when education was segregated and only accessible to the privileged few. Today, racism in education takes different forms, from unequal access to resources, biased curriculums, to discrimination against students and educators from minority groups. In contrast, schools located in low-income neighborhoods have limited resources, outdated facilities, and inexperienced teachers, which negatively affect their students' performance.
According to a report by the U.S. Department of Education, there is a significant funding gap between schools in affluent neighborhoods and those in low-income areas. The report states that schools in high-poverty areas receive an average of $1,200 less per student than schools in low-poverty areas (U.S. Department of Education, 2016). This funding gap translates to fewer resources, outdated facilities, and a lower quality of education, which negatively affects the academic performance of students in low-income neighborhoods.Another form of racism in education is the biased curriculums, which are designed to favor one race over the other. For example, history textbooks that ignore the contributions of minority groups or present them in a negative light.
