(Introduction) In today's increasingly diverse and globalized world, it is crucial for children and teenagers to be prepared to interact with people from different backgrounds and cultures. Unfortunately, racism remains a significant problem in public schools, posing a threat to the development and well being of students. Because racism is a significant problem in public schools that hurts children and teens, we need to teach about racism and how to stop it. This issue not only affects those who are targeted but also has repercussions for the entire school community.

Racism can pop-up in various forms, such as discriminatory policies, biased teaching materials, and prejudiced attitudes from teachers and students.(Racial Profiling) These incidents can lead to students feeling isolated, excluded, or discriminated against, which in turn can negatively affect their performance in school and self esteem. One student even said, “I guess every time something like this happens, it takes a chunk out of you.” (Listeners) A clear indication that more work needs to be done to address this problem and shield kids and teenagers from its damaging effects is the persistence of racism in schools. (Racism is Literally Bad). A study shows that one effect of racism is that, “ Racism often causes a stress reaction in people of minority race populations. Over time, the stress reaction in the body can cause physical and psychological problems, including heart conditions and depression.” (Racism) And in another horiffic incident, a student feared for the lives of their friends at school and said, “someone is going to get killed” (Racism …show more content…
Additionally, projects that encourage students to look at their own biases and engage in deep conversation with their peers can foster a more incorporating and respectful school environment.
