The film, White Like Me is based on the works of Tim Wise, an American anti-racism activist and writer. The documentary explores racism in the United States through the concepts of white privileged and racial identity by Wise’s own experiences. He starts off by saying that the United States has overcome a lot of issues involving race from slavery to electing an African-American as president, but he disproves that theory by stating that racial inequality and racial bias still exists. Wise emphasizes that when the issues are ignored not only does injustice continues for the people of color but also damage is done to white people as well. In chapter 9 titled “Race,” Racism, Prejudice, Ethnocentrism, Segregation, and Discrimination are all concepts that connect to the film White Like Me. Countless of people fight for Ontological equality, the idea that every single individual is created equal, but with Wise’s works it is clear to see that it will only remain an idea. Racism is committed by the minority and the majority as Wise explains throughout the film. Prejudice thoughts and beliefs inflame acts of racist discrimination which can result into segregation as seen during the mid 1900’s. Tim Wise grew up with African-Americans, resulting into the absence of having Ethnocentrism beliefs like how he claims some of his people have. Ethnocentrism is the belief that one’s own culture or group is superior to others and the tendency to view all other cultures from the perspective of one’s own. In addition to Wise’s claim, every race/ethnicity constructs ideas like this. There’s a certain burden people of color carry when it comes to performance. They constantly have to worry about confirming certain stereotypes on a daily basis where as white people don’t because their actions are not ascribe to their race.
