Since the United States of America became a nation, racism, materialism and militarism have been unable to be conquered. People have been more interested in having more material things than having the real things that are important in life such as, health, friendships, and family. This is expressed in Martin Luther King Jr. quote: “We must rapidly begin the shift from a "thing-oriented" society to a "person-oriented" society. When machines and computers, profit motives and property rights are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, materialism, and militarism are incapable of being conquered.”

For many years, we have seen many governments trying to increase its military power because of fear. They fear of countries gaining too much power and being able to stand against each other government and since then the military rate has increased.
Materialism is a way of thinking that a material object is more important than spiritual or intellectual things. Materialism has increased over the years as technology is evolving every single year now, having the new iPhone is more important than a friendship to many people. Today there are fewer connections or relations with people face to face, now technology is used as a way of communication. With these three things still present today, Martin Luther King’s words have led us to think deeply if we actually are a “thing- oriented society”. I believe Martin’s words “thing-oriented society” are true. We do not see the real meaning of things because we are so stuck on the new iPhone. We see some people being rejected because of their color, race and looks and do not bother to do anything. We see the government increasing its military power yet we let it
