Railroad crossings, they can be extremely dangerous but they are there because trains are such a valuable part of modern day transportation. With modern day transportation of course we get around faster but it can get more dangerous and that sometimes can't keep people from getting hurt. Many things can get people hurt or even killed, these are the things that you should not do to keep safe and not break the law. One of the first things is never go under or around the gates when they are down, this applies to both pedestrians and vehicles. When approaching a railroad crossing turn down your radio and check both ways make sure you can see at least a mile down the tracks. One thing that a lot of people do is walk on railroad track with headphones in this is one illegal, and very stupid. Quoting a story, a train operator's story a young boy was walking on the train tracks with headphones in the operator was honking the horn but the boy kept walking and he didn't move and the boy was hit and killed by the train. This shows that you should never walk on train tracks and listen to music with earbuds at the same time because one you can't hear, and two it's illegal to walk on train track because it's considered trespassing. When coming to a railroad crossing in a car if you are in a hurry stop and wait for the train to pass, if you pull out in front of the train the odds of you surviving that is very very slim. A train cannot stop in time if you pull out in front of it because the trains are so heavy it takes at least 1 mile to stop. One other thing I want to cover is if you're a pedestrian with a cross guard down you need to wait even if you don't see a train if the gates are down and the lights are flashing a train is coming even if you don't see it a train is
