Sometime in our lives, we all will have to make tough, life altering decisions for either the best or the worst. "Rain Reign” by Ann M. Martin is a heartwarming and heart wrenching tale about a young girl named Rose and her pet dog, Rain. When Hurricane Susan hits her small town and Rain is lost, Rose’s life is swept up in the eye of the storm, and she has to learn how to navigate her feelings of melancholy and loneliness. In "Rain Reign", Ann M. Martin uses the symbolism of the rain to provide the audience with context, build suspense and stir empathy. In the beginning of the book, rain is used to provide the audience with context. The first time that rain is seen by the audience is when Rose first meets her pet dog, Rain. Wesley lets Rain out of the house during the storm and she becomes lost, adding to Rose’s emotional turmoil. Rose is becoming crazed, confused and concerned when she realizes that her Rain is all alone and lost: ““Rain! Rain! Rain! Rain” I scream into the damp, cloudy, and rainy morning The only sound I hear is the rain dripping. I begin to breathe fast. It starts to rain. I think this is a sign of panic.” (Page 90). Rose starts to become agitated and aggravated when she keeps remembering that the only reason that Rain is lost to her is because her father as ignorant and didn't have enough foresight to keep Rain inside during the storm: “I pace into my bedroom and back to the kitchen. My father is the one who left her out. The rain begins to pour outside of my house.” (Page 94). The fact that the rain becomes heavier and more recurring symbolizes how Rose’s panicked state becomes more immense and recurring. Martin makes sure that the audience feels the tension and suspense at the thought of Rain being lost and separated from
