Rainer Maria Rilke one of the forerunners of German Literature was a poignant lyric poet of the 19th century. Much of his poetry is conventional but he is also considered as a transitional figure between the traditional as well as the modern period. He writes allusive poems in German and French which display the grounds of his education as well as the mastery of the language. He was greatly influenced by the philosopher Heidegger and Kant. Moreover, Rodin was his greatest influence who taught him “the value of objective observation, which effected the transformation of his poetic style” (“Rainer Maria Rilke” http://www.wikipedia.org/) Between the years 1897 -1902, he undertook two extensive trips to Russia where he was deeply impressed by the Russian Mysticism. He stayed in a Buddhist monastery there which took his life into a new aura of of spiritualism of the east, which was later reflected in his poem such as “Buddha” & ‘Buddha in Glory”. He commented greatly on religious themes in an attempt to find meaning. An essence of eastern spiritualism is seen on these lines quoted from a letter to Karl Baron Du Frel on 16th Feb, 1897: “As from the charm of the mysterious, the domain of spiritualism have for me an important power of attraction because in the recognition of the many idle forces and in the subjugation of their power I see the great liberation of our remote descendants and believe that in particular every artist must struggle through the
