Next instead of fighting the dogs, Rainsford jumps off into the sea below, stunned and angered, Zaroff returns to his home. Rainsford is a hunter that falls off a ship and swims to Ship-Trap Island. Then he met General Zaroff who took him in. Soon Zaroff was hunting Rainsford. First Rainsford hide in a tree. Then he built a man catcher which wounded Zaroff.
When Rainsford(protagonist) awoke in bed he had remembered the night as if it had happened 10 minutes ago. As the scenes of him and Zaroff’s fight replayed in his head a smile grew on his face. He knew what he did was right and that he is not a murderer, he did what he had to do to survive and save the others trapped in the cellular. He had forgotten all about the cellular and was determined to find out where it was to free the others and find a way off of Ship-Trap Island.(Setting) He knew he would have to do a lot of convincing to the people trapped and try to explain that he wasn’t like Zaroff and is only trying to help them.

Rainsford used the resources on the island to try and take over his opponent, Zaroff, with different ruses and deceit. As the hours went by, he became more resourceful and had more courage to try and win Zaroff’s “game.” Being resourceful can be used in many different ways. It could be like Rainsford in “The Most Dangerous Game” or it can be like Paul in “An Ordinary Man.” Resourcefulness can be used to save just one person or hundreds of people.
He wants to leave right away. Rainsford was antsy but after spending more time on the island he became nervous especially when Zaroff said “The hunting was not good last night. The fellow lost his head. He made a straight trail that offered no problems at all. (Connell 30).
We later learn that the island is the home of General Zaroff, a Russian immigrant and devoted hunter, who lures boats to the jungle island and hunts the sailors for fun. The setting is necessary to the conflict because Rainsford being trapped on the island has no choice but to become the prey for Zaroff to hunt. In the beginning of the story, Rainsford tells Whitney
