A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry has many themes, some more important than others. Dreams seem to be a big focal point. Many of the characters have a dream of their own. One character in particular believes very strongly in their dream and seems never to loose sight of it. This character is Beneatha Younger. Beneatha seems to have her life all planned out in front of her. Many things contribute to Beneatha’s dream, such as her parents, strong mindedness, and Joseph Asagai. Beneatha also is very strong minded. She always seems to say what’s on her mind and doesn't care what other people think of it. Her being a very self opinionated person opens up the door for success. This trait will also helps her reach her dream. Beneatha also has self drive. She goes to school all of the time and enjoys it. Beneatha has her mind set on being a doctor and that’s what she is going to do. There is no doubt in her mind that she can do it. When Beneatha was a little girl she remembers seeing a boys face slit open right in front of her and she was immediately hooked. When the ambulance came she can remember seeing them helping him and fixing him up. Right then she new what she wanted to do in life, she wanted to be one of them. Beneatha wants to be able to help others and that is why being a doctor interests her. Joseph Asagai, Beneatha’s lover, has a big impact on Beneatha and her dreams in A Raisin in the Sun. Asagai is a very civil, intelligent, and caring young man from Nigeria. Asagai talks with Beneatha a lot about what she wants to do with her life. He knows that she wants to be a doctor and he believes that she has the ability to do it. Asagai seems to always be there for Beneatha. When Beneatha’s brother lost the money she is really upset because it gave her hope.
