The poem by Langston Hughes shows that the author was unable to achieve his dream because of his race. He starts the poem off saying “It was a long time ago” This shows that he started dreaming his dream when he was young and forgot by the time he got older. It states, “But it was there then, In front of me, Bright like a sun—My dream. And then the wall rose, Rose slowly, Slowly, Between me and my dream. Rose until it touched the sky—” The dream was going to come alive but then Americans or the whites did not let his dream come true, so the barrier started to rise slowly and went up high because of the discrimination of his color. Overall, it's trying to say that as you grew older and as time passed there were many issues with colored and non-colored people. Since these issues started to rise, colored people lost their right to live their dream and if they wanted their free life back they had to fight down the wall that has been created by the non-colored people. This poem relates to Raisin in the Sun because Walter had a dream of opening a liquor store but he couldn’t because of his race. When Beneatha was explaining her dream about being a doctor, Walter was trying to stop her because she can’t be one because her family is struggling and can’t the money to study because of their race.
