A Raisin in The Sun

“Family is not just an important thing; it is everything”- Michael J. Fox. A Raisin in The Sun is written by Lorraine Hansberry, a twenty-nine-year-old woman from Chicago, Illinois. This story is about the Younger family, an African American family who live in a two-bedroom apartment in Chicago and mourn the death of their patriarch (Big Walter). One day, they get a big amount of money from Big Walters insurance payment, but no one is really sure how to use the money in an effective way. The importance of family and the American dream can be clearly seen through the characters of Ruth, Walter, and Mama (Lena). Ruth Younger shows the importance of family. Walter wants what is best for is family even if that means trying new things to make bigger things happen. “I want so many things that they are driving me kind of crazy”. With Walter being the head of the house hold he is most important when it comes to family and finances, He then tries to do anything and everything in his power to provide things for his family. Dreams are what Walter lives on, he loves thinking about what he could have and what he could give to his family. “No-it was always money, mama. We just didn’t know about it”. Walter is a very “wild dreamer” but he means well, he tries his best to succeed and prosper for his family. Walter is money crazy but he means well and only wants money for one reason, to provide for his family. Furthermore, hearing all of these great characteristics and dreams, Walter, Lena, and Ruth clearly show importance towards family and the American dream. The characters of Ruth, Mama, and Walter show us the importance of family and the American dream. With Ruth being helpful and caring, Mama hardworking and sincere, Walter ties in with his hope. This play really shows how having dreams can keep a person going and on their feet. Having read this book, I have found that having dreams in not just a fantasy, if you can find something you are good at and work hard at it, you can make those dreams come
