Rakim Mayer is most usually known as the name A$ap Rocky. A$ap Rocky is known mainly for being a rap artist from Harlem. Some others know Rakim for bringing together the group A$ap mob. I like his style and his music. But Rakim is a hero to me because of the come up of his life that most people do not know. Rakim Mayers has had it rough. He grew up in the streets of Harlem where he was surrounded by drugs and gang activity. At just 12 years old, Rakim watched his dad go to jail for selling illegal street drugs. Shortly after that, bout a year later, Rakim lost his older brother. His older brother was murdered, shot and stabbed to death outside their apartment in Harlem New York. Instead of following in his father's footsteps and his brothers he looked to hip-hop and rap. Rakim at 8 years old was writing rhymes and experimenting with his rhymes and lyrics. Up until he was about 17 it was just something he used for a hobby or to pass the time while sleeping in shelters. At 17 years old he started to take it seriously and tried to start making a career out of what he loved. Rakim never really enjoyed school, he said when he did go he did really well he just had a hard time with it. Something that sets A$ap Rocky aside from others in the game is he tries to keep the old stuff back, he tries to have the roots of 2pac, Biggie Smalls because that's what he grew up on. What I mean is that his lyrics and his beats and the things he talks about while he raps are things that the greats all talked about, But he's giving it a now a days flow. Another asset is that he created a group known as “A$ap Mob” it brought a bunch of kids with creative minds together with their talents. A$ap Rocky had signed a record deal with Polo Grounds/Sony/RCA worth $3,000,000 each year. So one thing is that he took all the choices that his brother and father took and turned another direction.
