While wild egoism, anarchic, irresponsible, and destructive. Ralph Emerson wanted people to avoid conformity and false consistency, and follow their own instincts and ideas. He wanted people to do what they believe is right, rather than going with what society thinks. He wanted people to have Individualism. Being to self-reliant can be not such a good thing all the time. Self-reliance is you trusting yourself and following your instinct. Emerson is believed to be moral because he just wanted people to be true to who they are. Morality is a particular system of values and principles of conduct, especially one held by a specified person or society. Many questions have arisen but there are five main questions that philosophers have tried to respond. Does the end justify the means? Are punishment and the fear of punishment the only things that keep us from doing wrong? Do the needs of society outweigh the needs of the individual? Self-reliance was his most famous one. The term that applies to his work is self-interest is one’s personal interest or advantages especially when pursued without regard for others. Emerson compares to philosopher Adam smith. He believed that the perfect society was one in which all people were free to peruse self-interest. People were interested in making money in getting ahead, in providing the most comfortable standard of living for themselves and their families. Smith has a policy that is called laissez faire. Laissez faire means “allow to do.” (Janaro). He said Trust thyself every heart vibrates to that iron string. Accept the place the divine providence has found for you, the society of your contemporaries, and the connection of events.
