A person once said “The hardest part of growing up, is letting go of what you were used to; and moving on with something you’re not.” Ralph from Lord of the Flies and Eragon from Eragon grow up but, in different ways. Ralph is a young boy who gets stranded on an island with a bunch of boys and Eragon a 15 year old boy who lives with his uncle and his cousin Roran and finds a mysterious stone in the woods that hatches into a dragon. Although they both grow up throughout the book they, do it in different ways. Ralph is dependent on others to help him solve problems in his life and Eragon is has an innocence and encounters evil and has to face this evil. Ralphs has to be in charge of boys on a deserted island and be independent while Eragon has to overcome an immeasurable task having to face the Razac and overcome the fearful task. In the book Lord of the Flies Ralph becomes chief on the island. Normally a kid wouldn’t have to have such a responsibility. Adults take care of us they feed us and give us a home. Ralph has to take care of an island full of boys that task alone would be hard for anyone. Ralph gets through it though and is able to devise a working system of how the island should be run and who should do what when. Although this sounds nice, there are multitudinous challenges that Ralph has to face in this. People start to not do what they are told and do whatever they want and not do the assigned tasks. Ralph calls an assembly and says “We decide things. But they don’t get done. We were going to have water brought from the stream and left those coconut shells under fresh leaves… The shells are dry. People drink from the river… Who built the shelters? We all built the first one, four of us the second one, and me’n Simon built the last one over there…” (Chapter 5 Pg. 3).
