Ralph Lauren, as both man and the brand, is the true rags-to-riches American Dream tale. The brand started out with rags that after made into ties. Mr. Lauren, a Jewish kid from the Bronx who repackaged and sold the American Dream back to America and is the essential of the American brand, has stepped down after 48 years. For 48 years, Mr. Lauren was the frequent creative force behind the fashion brand he started, genuinely, “out of a drawer” in a confined space in the Empire State Building. His particular idea of preppy, aspirational American is so firm an aesthetic that the ‘New England look’ has determined and strengthened itself as a significant doctrine of American fashion.(1) Ralph Lifshitz was born in New York City on Oct. 14, 1939. His parents were Ashkenazi Jewish immigrants from Belarus.(2) Ralph Lauren’s first began his fashion business at DeWitt Clinton High School. He’d work at Alexander’s in the evening and he would upsell handmade ties to his students with about $7-10 markup during the day. Brooks Brothers refused Lauren’s designs and that forcing him to approach some other manufacturers in which he ended up at upscale New York neckwear boutique, Beau Brummell. He created which he was mainly working out of a drawer and sold pieces direct from his Empire State Building
