A group of boys from Britain are being flown on a plane out of their country because a raging war has erupted and it was no longer safe. As they are flying the plane is shot down in the midst of the war and the boys go crashing down onto a deserted tropical island. The boys regather themselves and realized the situation that they were in. The boys quickly pick a leader and it is a character named ralph, as the story goes on there are many challenges the little group of boys face. Golding demonstrates the theme that we need civilization to tame the savage within us all in a variety of ways throughout the novel.
The mannered and civilized boy, Ralph, shows excellent survival skills. He uses logic and strategic planning to gain durability in an unfamiliar environment. For example, when the group of boys crashed into the deserted island, he commenced the first meeting and started a bonfire. Another example would be how the boys would come up with assumptions and superstitions of an actual beast that exists in the island, he investigates to find out that it was actually a dead paratrooper, and uses that as evidence to tell everyone to keep calm, (although they didn't believe in him). These events all imply on how Ralph is a natural leader in any given situation.
Ralph: Leading Anarchy in Lord of The Flies In the novel, Lord of the flies, the author William Golding conveys the theme of anarchy through the transformation of Ralph. When the boys first crash in the island Ralph calls the first assembly using the conch. This assembly is mainly used to do the basic planning of what they’re going to on the island: shelters, hunting water collection and name gathering.
In the first couple chapters of the book , Ralph is acting like a great leader, one great decision that showed his ability to lead was the idea of whoever held the conch shell can talk, while everyone else had to listen to the person holding the shell. This was a great decision because it kept everyone under control while people are sharing their ideas. If this decision was not made then it would be almost impossible to have
Ralph made the suggestion of needing a leader for the time being, and what exactly they needed to be able to survive. When his leadership is overruled, it is natural for him to continue in his ambition to survive, proving his maintained integrity as a character. His use of the conch allows for him to fulfill his need for organization, but its failure to function as a representation of equal power suggests Ralph’s inability to lead. His loss of power is not seen in his actions following his loss, sensing that leadership is not a necessity, rather independence is what leads him to his success. At first glance, Ralph is a central character who starts and completes William Golding novel The Lord of the Flies. From the onset of the novel, he is described as a “fair boy” with an “attractive appearance” (p7, 29). The author compares his stature as that of a boxer, “as far as width and heaviness of shoulders went, but there was a mildness about his mouth and eyes that proclaimed no devil” (p11). He has the physique and presence of a typical leader – strong but with a kind heart that makes him trustworthy.
"Lord of The Flies" can be identified as a literature story. According to the author "Ralph stood, one hand against the trunk, and adressed them: "You're not acting like human beings. Next thing you know, you'll be eating each other" (Golding 38). The quote expresses how Ralph can identify how Jack and the other guys are acting and that shows he is more sane then the other boys on the island. By analyzing this message we learn that humans can turn evil by nature.
Leadership is something that stands out. Good leadership is always important. You always want to follow the strongest person in the group right? Well in the book called “Lord of the Flies” Ralph is a better leader than Jack. Some reasons include Ralph has a goal or clear vision of being rescued.
The Lord Of The Flies by William Golding takes us to an abandoned island, where there is a fight for leadership among boys. Jack and Ralph were friends but when civilization is tested. Jack turns to savagery. Ralph struggles to survive and bring back order and civilization.
Then the fact that Jack was leading a dictatorship. Also that Ralph’s style of leadership is better then Jack’s. In the book The Lord of the Flies we can see that many conflicts happen while the kids are in the island, most of these conflicts are struggled to be solved. The main conflict and the one that I 'm going to be talking about is the conflict between Ralph and Jack, were both boys compete for power. Ralph is more civilized and tries to make a fire and build tents while Jack is more of a savage who uses violence and wants to hunt all the time. Its is easy to see that in this literary piece the author uses many conflicts to make the reader visualize wants happening in the island. Ralph is voted by the boys to be the leader of the group, in the book he represents leadership, civilization and order.
Ralph represents leadership, civilization, and order. He decides to build huts and find ways of being rescued while the other boys play and have fun. This is why Ralph is elected leader by the boys. Ralph also refuses to give into his savage instincts over the course of the novel while the other boys gradually
After reading Lord of the Flies I asked myself a question, was Ralph a good leader or not? In my opinion Ralph was a decent leader, but he could’ve been better. He was a good leader in some ways, but he wasn’t in other ways. Some readers argue that Jack would’ve been a better leader than Ralph. I think if Jack and Ralph became co leaders they would’ve succeeded more in bettering the tribe and surviving more as a group.
