Ralph is immediately admired as a leader. Everyone but Jack and his friends vote for Ralph over Jack. Those that voted for Ralph did so because of all his proven leadership qualities. He is confident, anything but shy, strong, and he is clear that he will do anything to get them rescued including doing a lot of the dirty work himself such as hunting the beast and building all of the shelters. Ralph tries to keep a friendship going between him and Jack after he wins the mini election by appointing him leader of the hunters. This shows that Ralph does not hold any childish grudges. His commitment to maintaining a friendship grows even more when he realizes Jack is turning to savagery side. He takes as much action as he can to keep the fire alight, and is completely distraught when the fire burns out and the distant ship passes. He proceeds to strongly state the importance of the fire and tries his hardest to keep it alight. At first, Ralph is excited at the fact that there are no adults on the island, but immediately after he begins to wish for the comfort and organization of the society he grew up accustomed to. He realizes the importance of getting back home, and then focuses all his time trying to achieve that. Ralph perfectly contrasts Jack’s force for evil with his force for good, but as more and more of the boys joined the hunters, Jack’s savagery outweighed Ralph’s force for good. Ralph always did his best to keep order. He respected all of the rules of the conch, and enforced them when characters such as Jack interrupted those speaking while holding the conch, especially Piggy.
