Ralph Waldo Emerson states in “Self-Reliance” that travelling is a fool’s paradise. Emerson says that a person who travels just travels farther from himself. He states that staying at home is better because our minds are forced to travel when one stays at home. However others disagree and say travelling is the best way to find oneself. Travelling helps the mind grow through isolation, knowledge, and responsibility. Travelling to foreign countries can be an isolating experience because of the unfamiliarity to the country and the language barrier. Through travel one gains more knowledge than staying put at home. A study by SYTA (Students and Youth Travel Association) on student travel says that 50% percent of teachers found that travel has a benefit on performance in the classroom and understanding of the curriculum. When I traveled to Washington D.C. on a school field trip I learned about the Holocaust when visiting the Holocaust Memorial Museum It allows for oneself to experience many different cultures, lifestyles, and people. Writers like Ernest Hemingway and Aldous Huxley gained inspiration through traveling in Europe. A study by various psychologist and neurologist says that adventuring abroad can cause mental change. It helps one gain a new perspective on life and how we should approach it. It helps us have a deeper appreciation for our own and other cultures. Being able to learn about the lives of others helps deepen an understanding for oneself. One can also gain knowledge through visiting historical places and monuments. People learn more through experiencing places filled with history instead reading about it.
