Ralph was all alone with no form of government and the savages were trying to find him. In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, there are a group of boys, that do not know each other, that are stranded on an island. Ralph is inarguably the main character and leader of this book. Ralph shows true leadership throughout Golding’s book.
Ralph was a true leader. Ralph tried the best he could to keep the boys positive in knowing that they would be rescued. On Page 37 of the book Ralph stated, “My fathers in the Navy. He said there aren’t any unknown islands left. He says the Queen has a big room full and all the islands in the world are drawn there. Another reason that Ralph fits the role of a good leader is that he is not strict on rules. This may not seem like a good characteristic of a leader, but because he is leading boys from ages 5-12, they cooperate because he is not strict on rules. On page 35, Ralph declares that, “This is our island. It is a good island. Until grownups come fetch us we’ll have fun.” This shows that he is a lenient and entertaining leader. Having a positive attitude and not being too strict are good characteristics for a leader in Ralphs situation.
