The role of a parent is to provide and care for their children, allowing them to thrive and grow into an independent adult. The parents have been preparing for this day since that child was born, sending their children off into the “real world”. These parents show them the ways of life, they allow the children to make mistakes. When a child makes a mess what does the parent do? They clean it up for them. From time of birth, a child depends on a parent figure. Once a child is thrown into the real world and is seen as a legal adult, they no longer have their parents to clean up their messes for them. They are expected to be independent, only dependent on themselves. However Independence can never be reached when it is human nature to depend on others. In the novel, Lord of the Flies, Ralph was picked as chief but, he never was chief on his own. Without the help from Jack, Ralph fails his duties as chief. Without help from Piggy, again Ralph fails. Ralph never wanted to make decisions, tackle tasks, or simply be in charge without the guidance and approval from the others. Once Jack left and created his own tribe, Ralph and the boys that stay could no longer fight against Jack’s tribe. Once Piggy was brutally murdered, Ralph was hunted down and Jack attempts to murder him. A person is taught from the time that they were little they would always have someone to rescue them or help them. Ralph in the beginning of the book believed his father would come and rescue the boys. Ralph, along with any child, that has ever been in a serious situation has always relied on the fact that help will come. Without this help, a person will fail miserably in life because they are were taught to lean on others all their
