Randle McMurphy enters the mental institute with an attitude thinking he outsmarted the government by escaping hard work; ultimately leading him to see himself superior to the other patients. Randle McMurphy was initially brought to the psych ward because he convinced the military jail that he was psychotic. According to the military, McMurphy charged with statutory rape and it is this charge that set the story into play. “‘...and one arrest- for Rape… with a child of fifteen’”(45). R.P. McMurphy manipulated the system into thinking he was crazy. After McMurphy’s death, Chief takes it upon himself to escape the ward and go to Canada. “I took a deep breath and bent over and took the levers… The glass splashed out in the moon, like cold water baptizing the sleeping earth” (324). In this scene, Chief Bromden took the control panel in the tub room, carried it, and smashed open the window so that he could escape. This plan was thought of by McMurphy and he had asked Chie for help but Chief refused. After McMurphy’s death, Chief Bromden carried out his plan and escaped. It was McMurphy’s passing that gave him the courage to escape. As said in this quote, “Leadership is not about a title or a designation. It's about impact, influence and inspiration. Impact involves getting results, influence is about spreading the passion you have for your work, and you have to inspire team-mates and customers” (Sharma), the courage that McMurphy had in his life was passed down to his fellow patients and it allowed them to live of their lives with confidence in
