Rape is an unfortunate reality. It is a sad truth that many people don’t realize. Rape: A Love Story brings attention to a gang rape done to a mother named Teena Maguire. Although it would be assumed that justice would be served and those who have committed this act are penalized, no questions asked that, however, is not the case. A high percentage of girls get raped every day. However the common phrase used is, “Tight sexy clothes showing her breasts, her ass, what’s she expect?”(Oates 5). It isn’t the fault of alcohol nor the fault of mini skirts; but rather in this world, it has become a place where she has less of a worth. The victim goes from being just a victim of such a traumatic event to the accused. As the trial takes place the idea that a chain is only as strong as its weakest link applied to this situation. “A jury is as bright as its dumbest member of the jury. You need only strike a kindred cord with one of them, and you're free, son”(Oates 149). This furthers the fact that the justice system is corrupt to begin with, giving Bethie more reason to take control herself.
