I would grade Rascal with an A for sure. This book is about a boy named Sterling who goes out into the woods with his dog Wowser to meet his friend Oscar. While out in the woods, Wowser starts digging under a tree and find an angry mother raccoon that attacks him. When the raccoon and her children run away Oscar manages to catch one that he gives to Sterling. That moment is the start of a book full of many adventures. A really good reason for grading this book an A is that it portrays a boy growing up in small town in the olden days, raising himself. Is an important quote because Sterling was growing up in a small Wisconsin town, living with his father. His mother died when he was 7, and his father is often gone on business trips leaving Sterling by himself. Because of this Sterling is very responsible, resourceful, and mature for his age. This really shows between Sterling and Rascal. Sterling learns how to feed Rascal, and gives him pecans and sugar lumps as treats. He helps the raccoon to grow and takes him on adventures when his father is away. Possibly the most important reason is that it shows how much a pet can mean to a child. Rascal meant the world to Sterling, and they did everything together. Rascal was Sterling Best friend, but his sister Theo came home and was very against him keeping Rascal from the moment she found out about him. She talked Sterling into hiring a housekeeper, but the housekeeper was also very against him keeping rascal. So Sterling finished building the canoe in his living room, and took Rascal n a ride down the river, and they both knew that this would be their last ride. A female raccoon was calling to Rascal from the shore, and eventually Rascal jumped off the canoe and swam to shore. Rascal disappeared into the bushes forever, and Sterling canoed home
