The act of a homicide is when a human is murdered. As a law enforcement officer, it is their job to determine the cause of death. They are to determine whether or not one’s killing was justified or if it was out of cold blood. According to United States Law, "Not all homicides are crimes". A homicide means to kill a human. Often times, homicides violate the criminal law set in stone by the government. Crimes such as murder and manslaughter fall under the category of homicide. When people are about to commit a crime, they believe that they will receive more of a positive outcome opposed to a negative one from the crime they are about to commit. "This is a term that applies to what and why people decide to act in violence. Mentally, this theory attempt to get at the motivations and or goals of one person, whether that be emotional passion or wealth. Decision makers are assumed to be goal-oriented and self-interested individuals who are endowed with stable and well-ordered 'preferences', and who judge different courses of action by their expected consequences, subject to opportunities and constraints on their time and resources, and in such a way as to maximize their utility or overall satisfaction" (Apel, 2013). Rational choice theory stands on the idea that your own personal gain from a crime is stronger than abiding by the rules of the law. It is human nature for humans to look out for their own interest and not care about others. Some people do this to more extremes than others, aka killing someone. They would rather look at what they have to gain than what they might be hurting or inflicting on others. Some theories show that homicide does an excellent job at giving people a rush or some sort of power due to the magnitude of homicide. Although they differ, when one kills for a financial benefit, this also plays into emotional pleasure. They both are filling a void in ones life that is missing. Law Enforcement officials are expected to make beneficial and positive decisions to help the public and society as a whole. If police officers take positive steps towards stopping crimes (such as getting guns off the street, or locking people up for other crimes they have committed) it can directly influence the homicide rates and keep violent offenders off of the streets (assuming the courts keep these animals behind bars). It does not matter the background, people have the choice to accept or deny feelings they might have. Everyone is responsible for their own actions and deserved to be punished for them.
