Many, would say it’s difficult to be a young mother and raise an infant, but that’s not always true. In the book, Spellbound, by, Janet McDonald, shows how you can be a young mother and raise an infant successfully. Raven Jefferson the main character, goes through hard times being a high school dropout, still living at home with her mother and raising her son Smokey, alone. Raven deals with a lot of conflict with school, struggling to find her true character within herself and something she didn’t expect to happen, which was her winning a spelling bee and getting a scholarship for it! First, throughout the book, there’s a lot of conflict, especially with Raven dropping out of school. Raven quit school at a young age to provide for her son. Raven knew that wasn’t a clever idea. Taken into consideration that her best friend Aisha struggles too, with an infant being a dropout, she knew she didn’t want to live that type of lifestyle. Raven tries her hardest to get a job, but without a diploma, that an application requires, getting a job is nearly impossible because she is lacks sufficient education. “Raven had never filled out a job application…” (24). “I want a job.” (81) “College.” (81) She’s terrible with spelling so she thinks the spelling bee will be the worst thing that has happened to her all her life. Fortunately Raven was wrong. With help from her sister Dell and her friend Aisha, she started memorizing words incredibly fast! This was progress to her and she was quite proud of herself for once. When she finally went to the spelling bee she was nervous, but after all the practice she had been doing, it did pay off. To her and everyone else surprise she won the spelling bee! Raven felt unstoppable from reaching her dreams and accomplishing anything in life
