In her stories of nature and the basis of life in the south, Rawlings had brought many beautiful and successful stories such as the Cross Creek, the Yearling, and also the South Moon Under. Also the struggles for living in these environments and life styles. And to understand these struggles, reading must be a hobby to enjoy. One of Rawlings stories is named and famously known as Cross Creek. Rawlings takes the reader to a southern town called Cross Creek, to Martha Mickens and her family. She had loved to hunt in the forests and swamps in the South, she also admired Mother Nature and it creatures that are part of it. Rawlings had always known that she had the blood of a farmer in her, but she never expected for it to be so hard and rough. Martha had always told her that if she had loved the land, then no one would ever starve. And for comfort, she didn’t really have much of it. Jody Baxter, a 12 year old boy in the story, whose determination was to have a pet that was kind to him and to be on his side no matter what happens. And the father was always having a desire for his childhood moments, while his mother was strict. He and his father had a farm that they worked on everyday all day. Whenever Jody has a chance of leaving and to have his own fun, he would take that chance and leave. His father would be disappointed, but always realized that childhood is so short and it’s wise to enjoy it. That once Jody grows up, he will have to work on a farm for the remainder of his life. And from Jody’s body, anyone can tell the he has been working in the farm for his whole life. He’s built just like his father that chose to work in the farm in the south. And to imagine knowing that the farm is your life is hard. Unlike the present that we have a choice to be what we want to be and to be as successful as we want, he already is destined for the hardship of the farm
