Ray Bradbury was an American fantasy and horror writer, best known for works such as The Martian Chronicles, Fahrenheit 451, and many other novels and short stories of varying genres. Bradbury lived a rather picturesque childhood, beginning his writing at a young age. Throughout his whole life, Bradbury continued writing, and he is now one of the most celebrated authors of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Since he was a child, Bradbury wanted to be remembered forever through his work, and as time has passed, it is clear that he has achieved this dream.
On August 22, 1920, in Waukegan, Illinois, Ray Bradbury was born. Waukegan, Illinois, was a quaint, quiet town. While it may seem unbelievable that a science fiction writer was born in a small urban city, this setting was actually incorporated into many of Bradbury’s short stories and semi-autobiographical novels. He sold newspapers to support himself while he wrote in his free time, and published his first short story in one in 1938, the same year he graduated. The next year Bradbury published four issues of his own magazine, Futuria Fantasia. Bradbury wrote most of the magazine himself, and attempted to hide the fact that it was a one-man magazine. Bradbury sold his first professional piece, titled Pendelum, in 1941, just a month before the United States entered World War II. However, Bradbury was ruled ineligible to join the military service due to his vision problems. During the War, Bradbury became a full-time writer in 1943. He published his first collection of short stories in 1947.
